Sword Care & Maintenance Guide

Japanese Sword Care & Maintenance Guide

Proper care and routine maintenance ensure your handcrafted Japanese sword retains its pristine polish, sharp cutting edge, and structural integrity for generations. Follow these essential guidelines to care for high-carbon steel, genuine Hamon, and natural wood fittings.

1. Essential Handling Rules

  • Never touch the blade with bare hands: Natural skin oils and perspiration contain moisture and acids that cause rapid oxidation and tarnishing on high-carbon and clay-tempered steel. Always use a clean cloth or wipe down immediately if touched.
  • Draw and sheathe with care: Never force the sword into the scabbard (Saya). Gently slide the blade with the spine (Mune) resting against the interior wood rather than cutting into the scabbard lining.
  • Keep dry: Keep your sword away from direct contact with water, high humidity, or damp environments.

2. Cleaning & Oiling Routine

  1. Remove old oil: Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth or non-abrasive rice paper to gently wipe away old protective oil and dust from the collar (Habaki) toward the tip (Kissaki).
  2. Inspect the blade: Check the blade surface and Hamon line under good lighting for any moisture, dust, or fingerprints.
  3. Apply fresh sword oil: Apply 2–3 drops of 100% pure Choji oil (sword oil) or high-grade mineral oil to a clean cloth, then lightly and evenly coat both sides of the blade. The oil layer should be paper-thin—never dripping wet.
  4. Wipe the fittings: Keep the guard (Tsuba), collar (Habaki), and handle fittings clean and dry with a dry cloth.

3. Storage & Display

  • Horizontal storage: Always rest your sword horizontally on a display stand with the cutting edge facing upward (Ha-up). This prevents the blade's weight from resting on and dulling the edge inside the wooden scabbard, and prevents oil from pooling in the tip.
  • Climate control: Keep your sword at room temperature in a dry space (40%–60% humidity). Avoid direct sunlight, heating radiators, and air conditioners.
  • Maintenance frequency: Inspect and re-oil your sword every 1 to 3 months, or immediately after cutting practice or handling.
